DENVER (D) · 95% COPPER, 5% TIN AND ZINC · VARIETY

The answer

Worth about $470–$2,350 circulated and $37,000–$53,000 in MS-65.

The 1922 No D Lincoln Wheat Cent is one of the major rarities of the series from the Denver Mint, with a mintage that is included in a larger issue. In circulated grades (G-4 to EF-40) our estimate is $470–$2,350, and a well-preserved MS-65 example is estimated at $37,000–$53,000. Because this is a key date, condition and authenticity matter far more than metal content: have any high-value coin graded by a recognised service.

The "No D" or Plain cent was struck from a 1922-D die that lost its mint mark through wear and polish. All 1922 cents come from Denver, as Philadelphia struck no cents that year.

Struck from a heavily worn 1922-D die that lost its mint mark. Included in the 1922-D mintage; no Philadelphia cents were struck in 1922.

No D

The 1922 No D shows no mint mark at all. Because it came from a worn die, the date and letters usually look weak. Many 1922-D cents with a weak D are mistaken for it, so a clean, flat area under the date is the tell.

Mint mark position

D and S sit below the date on the obverse. Compare against the date: forged mint marks are common on 1909-S V.D.B., 1914-D and 1931-S.

Color: brown, red-brown, red

Bronze cents tone over time. Uncirculated prices assume red-brown (RB) toning; full red (RD) coins are worth more, brown (BN) coins less.
