The Mercury Dime, in brief
The Mercury dime, officially the Winged Liberty Head dime, was struck from 1916 to 1945 in 90% silver. Adolph A. Weinman's design shows a young Liberty with a winged cap, which people mistook for the god Mercury, and a reverse with a fasces and olive branch. It replaced the Barber dime and was itself replaced by the Roosevelt dime after the president's death in 1945.
Circulated Mercury dimes are worth their silver plus a small premium. The 1916-D, with only 264,000 struck, is the key date and is worth thousands in any grade. Full Bands (FB) examples, where the bands on the fasces are sharply split, carry big premiums.
